About Mount Vermio Forests

Mount Vermio Forests cover a significant portion of Mount Vermio (also known as Vitsi) in the region of Western Macedonia, Greece. Rising to an elevation of 2,052 meters at its peak, the forested mountain area is characterized by mixed coniferous and deciduous trees, including beech, fir, and pine species. The geography features steep slopes, high plateaus, and several small alpine lakes, creating varied ecological zones. Rich biodiversity includes mammals such as roe deer, wild boar, and foxes, alongside numerous bird species like the golden eagle and various woodpeckers. Historically, Mount Vermio has been used traditionally for forestry, grazing, and winter sports. Its slopes host winter resorts, making it a regional hub for skiing and snowboarding. During warmer months, the forests attract hikers, mountain bikers, and nature enthusiasts who explore trails leading to scenic viewpoints and sites like the historic village of Naousa at the mountain's base. The forests play an important role in watershed protection and contain protected natural habitats under EU conservation programs. Visitors can explore well-marked trails, small shelters, and picnic areas. The region offers a mix of outdoor recreation opportunities that combine nature appreciation with cultural experiences through local villages and mountain chalets. The Mount Vermio Forests provide an accessible getaway for diverse outdoor activities throughout the year, from snow sports in winter to birdwatching and fishing in summer.
